Durham Local Food Network – encouraging organic, small scale, local, honest food that does not contribute significantly to climate change, does not require vast amounts of fossil fuel input, and has a connection to County Durham.

Nafferton Ecological Farming Group – research unit within Newcastle University. Researchers focus on low-input and organic approaches to crop and livestock management.

Permaculture and Transition in North East England – practical action to make the North East more sustainable and less reliant on fossil fuels.


Centre for Agroecology and Food Security – based at Coventry University. Aims to conduct critical, rigorous and relevant research which will contribute to the development of agricultural and food production practices, which are economically sound, socially just and promote long-term protection of natural resources.

Centre for Food Policy – based at City University London. Researches and educates on how policy-making processes work and how they both reflect and shape the nature of food supply and consumption. Interested in the policy place of food in society and the impact on health, environment, social justice and economy.

Environmental Practice @ Work – engages, enables and educates people to improve environmental performance of their organisation.

Food Climate Research Network – aims to increase understanding of how the food system contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and ways to reduce this.

Food Ethics Council – charity that provides independent advice on the ethics of food and farming. Their aim is to create a food system that is fair and healthy for people and the environment.

Food Matters – social enterprise that aims to create sustainable and fair food systems.

Sustain – the alliance for better food and farming. Advocates food and agriculture policies and practices that enhance the health and welfare of people and animals, improve the working and living environment, enrich society and culture and promote equity.

Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens – a registered charity which supports, represents and promotes community-managed farms, gardens, allotments and other green spaces, creating opportunities for local communities to grow.
